Rayven's Waste Tracking + Reconciliation solution delivers total, traceable transparency.

Introduction

Infrastructure projects must comply with strict sustainability requirements regarding recycling, the reuse of spoil, and the safe disposal of contaminated spoil.

Projects generally target to re-use greater than 95% of the virgin excavated natural material (VENM) and excavated natural material (ENM) waste generated with the remaining spoil to be disposed of as waste at an approved facility, licensed to receive it.

It is a legal requirement to accurately monitor and track material movements and account for spoil with large fines and license loss consequences for failure to do so.

Waste tracking + reconciliation needs digital transformation.

The problem

A lot of waste tracking is reliant on decades-old approaches that need reassessing with modern technologies. Rayven and our customer outlined the problems that needed solving to be:

  • Manual processes and arduous paperwork takes time and makes it very difficult to keep track of in a timely manner.
  • Contractors' lack control and visibility of their waste movement once vehicles leave the construction site.
  • Compliance failures were mainly due to mistakes and malicious behaviour, leading to risks that couldn't be tracked.
  • The Environment was being negatively impacted with fines that could potentially cost tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

Bring together real-time waste monitoring, financial reconciliation, and automated compliance auditing.

The solution

We developed an updated process, based on existing protocols, that leveraged commonly used technologies integrated together into our world-leading integrated data, AI + IoT platform, to create a custom front-end user industrial application that enables the client to accurately track, manage and reconcile waste movements offsite.

Defining what data to collect is critical
In order to create the solution we started by identifying the data needed to deliver these metrics. In this solution this included:

  1. Truck movement tracking + GPS data
  2. Map data/Geofencing
  3. Check-ins
  4. Driver/contractor details
  5. Waste information
  6. Final waste deposits (photo/imagery)

Solution set-up
Our platform was deployed into the customer's private cloud and integrated with existing and new hardware/systems, and a front-end application created that would allow for the following procedure to occur:

  1. Truck arrives at construction site
  2. Driver checks in via mobile app
  3. Waste trip is activated by driver
  4. System tracks trucks movement
  5. System identifies that truck arrived at the correct landfill
  6. Driver takes picture of docket
  7. Docket data is saved in the system
  8. Trip is closed off + audited by the system

Before go-live, we test four critical aspects of the solution:

Security
Our platform is built with security as a top priority and our proprietary security architecture ensures that data is secure at all points of the environment.

The application created that runs on it to track and reconcile waste includes data encryption in transit from device-to-cloud, as well as device authentication; security (Bearer) tokens; SSL, AES and RSA encryption; as well as additional device security checks done via automated polling.

Connectivity
Data from infield devices is collected via a 4G connection, with external map data is accessed via a WebAPI. Additional data is added directly through data entry screens and via integrations with existing systems and software, such as contractor information stored in existing database and SaaS platforms.

Data integrity
Your ability to make the right decisions is highly reliant on the integrity of your data. Making sure that you have reliable connections means that your data is always up-to-date and that you can rely on it, giving you the confidence to make critical business decisions in real-time based on it. As part of implementation, we tested and ensured that the raw data matched what was being seen in the dashboards and enabled back-fill capabilities just in case communication ever went down.

The benefits

We were able to enable this business to accurately and effortlessly track waste movements, as well as provide new data insights that have led to further improvements around load and haul efficiency, as well as contractor selection.

Key benefits from the solution include:

  • Transpareny + control: Our solution monitors and manages soil, spoil and all other waste material on and off site in real-time.
  • Compliance + auditability: Our solution collects all the waste disposal data and converts it to data sets for later settlement of accounts.
  • Environment + safety: Our solution makes sure the subcontractors comply with requirements and eliminate malicious behaviour.

By using real-time data, our customer is making smarter waste management decisions, reducing workloads, and delivering better results for both them and the wider community.

Track and view quantities and volume of material reused and/or disposed of.

Mapping

Real-time mapping data showing spoil movement (volumes, exact pickup and exact dumping locations).

Contamination tracing

Oversight of contaminated soil hauling  (e.g. ACM) - volumes, exact pickup and dumping locations.

Spoil management hierachy

Created a spoil management hierarchy in compliance with EIS and otherconditions of approval.

Facility tracing

Disposal of excess spoil as waste at an approved facility licensed to receive the material in compliance with EIS and other Conditions of Approval.

Sustainability auditing

Track performance against sustainability targets.

Simple reporting

Produce sustainability + performance reports including monthly quantities of spoil reused and spoil disposed of.

Reduce manual reconciliation

Records a copy of the landfills waste dockets.

Collect data sets

Extract historical data from all waste trips to be also used for settlement of accounts and find improvements.
